We are grateful to Maarten Bassens for suggesting the derivation of the present composition from Leonard Gaultier’s engraved treatment of the same subject, adapted from Giacomo Franco’s print, first published in Le metamorfosi di Ovidio, Venice 1584. Gaultier was associated with the influential Second School of Fontainebleau, by which several Flemish artists were inspired in the final flowering of Northern Mannerism.
