The present painting is a fine example of the genre painting of the Dutch Golden Age master Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh, who specialised in peasant scenes and still lifes. His work resembles the paintings by Cornelis Saftleven, Pieter de Bloot and Adriaen Brouwer.
