"Hartung works like Fontana, but he does not cut into the canvas because he feels that the sign must sustain and embody its own absence. After all, painting is reduced to the non-existent, but the latter, like Calvino's Agilulfo, is iron will, order, precision. Hartung's shot does not kill painting, but summons its energy, entire and alone, to declare its uncontaminated authenticity".
