Galerie Christian Lethert, Cologne
Literature:
Sediment, Mitteilungen zur Geschichte des Kunsthandels, Erhard Klein, Vollkonzentriert, Galerie Klein 1970 – 2006, Nürnberg, p. 24 (with ill.)
Erhard Klein worked as a gallery owner for 35 years, and is considered an icon in his field. He became an artistic medium rather than just a gallery owner. The editions of the Klein Gallery in Bonn decisively represent the interaction between work and interpretation as well as that between producer and publisher. They are associated both with the name of the gallerist and that of his artists.
Following the previously published Beuys multiple "ERHARD KLEIN UNKONZENTRIERT", the two artists Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen took this concept up again in their exhibition "FRAUEN IM LEBEN MEINES VATERS" at the Klein Gallery in 1983. The exhibition invitation depicted a photograph of the two artists on the front and the stamp "ERHARD KLEIN VOLLKONZENTRIERT" on the back.
The back of the invitation forms part of the two collages from the present work. The figure of the gallery owner merges with the art exhibited, and he becomes a component of the artwork. The interaction between gallery owner and artist thus comes to the forefront of the art.
Both collages also contain excerpts from a massage studio flyer. They are eclectic snippets by two artists bursting with inspiration, and a snapshot of the wild eighties by two of the biggest names in German contemporary art.
