A New Britain Tolai ceremonial dance axe 'Pem'.

Softwood, Early 20th century, 112 cm long. These ceremonial weapons are a part of a group of sacred objects known as pokopoko. The pem was used ritually in a ceremony associated with the death of a high-ranking deceased member of the community. To prepare for the events of the ceremony, the pem is painted with red paint and the tubuan initiate with a mask representing the 'grandmother' picks up the pem and carries it to the entrance of the deceased's home. After ceremony, the pem is returned to a special and sacred place. (VJ)
