A Walzenkrug Stein with Höroldt Chinoiserie, Meissen c. 1730,

cylindrical jug with curved handle, the front with a large quatrefoil cartouche with strapwork on purple ground and leaves in iron red and purple, containing a finely painted chinoiserie scene in the style of the workshop of Johann Gregorius Höroldt, in the centre as the main character a Chinese in formal robes with a parasol, next to him a servant or merchant offering him a cloth, to the left of it two tea-drinking and pipe-smoking Chinese figures in conversation, next to them a servant with a fan, in the background flowering shrubs, flying birds and insects, on the strapwork of the cartouche right and left two more figures, surmounted by a teapot and a fruit basket, on the back of the handle and body blossoms and branches of Indian flowers, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, base and lid with silver mount, the lid with inset silver thaler Elector Friedrich Christian of Saxony dated 1763, height 22.5 cm and diameter of the porcelain jug 11.5 cm, red crossed swords mark in overglaze colour, a firing crack or restored crack to the handle is visible on the inside of the jug, the paintwork is partly scuffed and scratched, (GO)

Provenance:
South German private ownership

Literature:
exh. cat. Exotische Welten. Schulz-Codex und das frühe Meissener Porzellan, Grassi Museum, Leipzig 2010, no. 76a.
Rückert, Rainer: Meissener P 1710-1810, Munich 1966, no. 147.

A distinctive feature of this jug with Höroldt decor is its additional dynamization by means of other finely painted figures or objects on the strapwork of the cartouche. The figures in the frame refer to the Chinoiserie with their typical Chinese pictorial themes, such as the teapot, and interweave the expansive decoration with the picture field itself. This detail of the design of the gold cartouche, as well as the flower branches on the back and the handle, can be compared with a Walzenkrug stein from the the porcelain collection of the SKD (inv. no.: PE 1533). This Dresden Walzenkrug stein from Höroldt's workshop is dated around 1726, and August Dietze (1695-1769) or Johann Ehrenfried (1701-1741) are taken in consideration as its possible decorators.
