Theodor Aman is one of the founders of the Modern Romanian School alongside Nicolae Grigorescu. He initially studied with Constantin Lecca at the Carol I National College at Craiova. He then moved to Paris in 1853 where he studied with Michel Martin Drolling and François-Edouard Picot. He exhibited at the Salon for the first time that same year. There he came into contact with Romanian revolutionary circles. He travelled to Istanbul and visited Sevastopol during the Crimean war. His strong patriotic sentiments are evident in his depiction of the battle of Alma, which was presented at the 1855 Paris Exposition.
In 1857 he settled down in Bucharest where he opened the National School of Fine Arts in 1864 with Gheorghe Tattarescu, where they both taught painting. In 1865 he organised the first exhibition of contemporary artists living in Romania.
