Morocco: a large necklace with 10 round spiral amulets made of silver, each strung on two double hanks with long pieces of red coral. Finished off at the sides with amber beads and red cotton strings. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A large necklace from southern Morocco (Souss plain and valley) With ten flat, round amulets in very high-quality silver, engraved on their front side with continuous spiral lines. In this region, the spiral is the symbol of eternity. Five silver spiral amulets at a time are strung onto two doubled-over strings through the adjacent silver eyelets. In between the amulets there are many long pieces of red coral, pierced like beads. The hanks at either end are finished off at one end with an old Moroccan silver coin and an amber bead, and at the other end with a decorative silver coin (unminted) and an additional amber bead.
Long tassels made of braided red and red-and-white cotton strings are hung outwards from these. An impressive necklace made of old pieces, with traces of use, which may have been restrung once over the course of time. No damage.
Length: 42 cm (without side tassels). First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: German private collection.

Lit.: ‘The Splendor of Ethnic Jewelry. From the Colette and Jean-Pierre Ghysels Collection’, ill. p. 34; ‘A World of Necklaces’ by Anne Leurquin, ill. 25.
