Yoruba, Nigeria: an old, male ‘ibeji’ twin figure, richly adorned with jewellery. Style: Erin, Oyo.

Yoruba, Nigeria: an old, male ‘ibeji’ twin figure, richly adorned with jewellery. Style: Erin, Oyo. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A twin figure, known as ‘ibeji’ (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64). The present, male ‘ibeji’ twin figure is unusually old: note the shiny worn patina on its face, through protracted ‘care’ and ministration of this figure. Carved from hard wood and originally coloured brownish-black. The high hairstyle has blue pigment through ‘bluing’ (‘Reckitt’s Blue’). The body shows remains of red sacrificial paste made of powdered redwood. Ornamented with a thick metal bangle and five chains of small, old glass beads, as well as a pierced cowrie shell, the ‘ibeji figure’ stands on a round plinth. An old crack to the left side of the head and age-related breaks to the hairstyle. Otherwise no damage. Yet with excellent shiny patina as a result of protracted use. Style: Erin, Oyo.
Height: 26.5 cm; width: 8 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Sale, Christie’s, 30 November 1994, lot 104; Private collection of Prof. Dr Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.

Lit.: ‘Ibeji. The Cult of Yoruba Twins’ by George Chemeche, ill. 85, 87, 88.
