Indonesia, Sumatra, Lampung province: a ceremonial textile called ‘Tampan’. With Tree of Life motif and animals.
In South Sumatra, in the Lampung province, fabric pieces with figural insert-weaving such as these would be laid on seats of honour, or valuable tributes would be tucked in such ‘Tampans’ when presented. The red, blue and yellow insert-weaving in the present, old ‘Tampan’ textile displays a central Tree of Life motif with symmetrical branches and mythical animals (dragons?). With patterned borders and slight remains of thin metal coating (brass).
