Kremser Schmidt treated the subject of Saint Sebastian repeatedly (cf. R. Feuchtmüller, Der Kremser Schmidt, Innsbruck/Vienna, 1989, nos. 196/1, 248, 249, 422, 423/1 and 450). The open manner of painting and the olive coloured priming from which the composition is economically modelled with glazes and impasto highlights suggests that the present painting dates from the 1790s.
