A mask from the shamanistic sphere of the tribes in the foothills of the Himalayas, the so-called ‘Middle Hills’ in Nepal (for a more precise description, see cat. no. 193). This mask probably originates from the Gurung or Magar people. Carved from lightweight, brown wood and dyed black. The eyes are outlined and the open mouth displays both rows of teeth. A piece in good condition, with usage patina, without damage. First half of the 20th century; H: 27 cm. (ME)
