Indonesia, Java: A Kris dagger with a straight blade.
A Kris dagger with straight, elaborately forged pamor blade (irregular ‘Beras wutah’ motif = scattered rice, and ‘Ntu walang’ motif = grasshopper teeth). The hilt takes a typical Javanese shape, made of reddish-brown wood, with two carved demon faces, the hilt ring (‘Mendak’) is made of metal with triangular ‘Tumpal’ motifs in filigree. The wooden sheath, with a boat (‘Wranka’) in a ‘Yogjakarta latrang’ shape (with wide, rising ends), is covered in sheet brass decorated with leafy tendrils and floral motif engraving. Good, old usage patina. 19th century or earlier. L: 47.5 cm. (ME)
