Jan Wellens de Cock, to whom this painting may be attributed on the basis of stylistic criteria, was one of the major exponents of northern Mannerism, alongside Herri met de Bles and Jan Mandyn. His frequently fantastical painting continued the tradition established by Hieronymus Bosch. In 1506, De Cock was appointed as master of the St. Lucas Guild in Antwerp, attaining the post of dean in 1520. Jan Wellens de Cock’s workshop was later taken over by his sons, Hieronymus and Matthys. They founded a well-known art publishing house with an associated printing works.
