Old Female Philosopher Bending Over a Book, oil on canvas, 73 x 54 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof. Luciano Anelli (author of the catalogue raisonné on Pietro Bellotti) for endorsing the present picture as autograph work on the basis of a photograph. Anelli considers it an ‘extremely beautiful’ painting. A further version of the Old Philosopher, which was published by Prof. Anelli in his monograph, and is preserved at Pommersfelden Castle. (see L. Anelli, Pietro Bellotti, Saggi di Alfredo Bonomi, Brescia: Grafo, 1996). Pietro Bellotti came to Venice at an early date, where he was apprenticed to Forabosco and, probably under a Northern influence, took to painting half-length portraits of ordinary types of individuals and old people which were characterized by a high degree of psychological sensitivity and meticulous precision. He developed outstanding skills in this genre. Condotto giovanissimo a Venezia, vi fu allievo di Forabosco e forse su influenze nordiche prese gusto con grande capacitá di immmedesimazione e precisione nel dipingere mezze figure di popolani e di vecchi.
