Gillis Jacobsz. van Hulsdonck

(Amsterdam 1626–1670) A magnificent still life with a clock, a roll, fruit, and a silver salt cellar on a marble tabletop, signed at lower left Hulsdonck, oil on canvas, 53 x 43.5 cm, framed,

We are grateful to Sam Segal, Amsterdam, and Dr. Fred Meijer, RKD, The Hague, who have independently identified the present painting as an autograph work by Hulsdonck (e-mail messages to the consignor of January 2010). The relevant entry in Lexikon der holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert reads: „In terms of style, the pictures by Gillis van Hulsdonck are inspired from those by Willem Kalf. In comparison to Kalf‘s paintings, those by Van Hulsdonck distinguish themselves by an extremely soft brushwork that lends all of his objects an almost velvety surface. This softness is augmented by the painter‘s treatment of light and shade and is additionally emphasized by creamy highlights and subtly nuanced shadows. Bergström refers to Van Hulsdonck as one of the few ‚intimists‘ in Dutch still life painting of the second half of the seventeenth century…“
