Carlo Antonio Procaccini

(Bologna 1555-c. 1630) Allegory of Touch, oil on canvas, 106 x 165 cm, framed

Whe thank Dr. Camillo Manzitti, Genoa, for identifying the present painting as a work by Carlo Antonio Procaccini. The complex iconography is revealed to the spectator through the different manifestations of the sense of touch described in this painting. The large format is unusual for this subject. Camillo Manzitti points out that the known oeuvre of this Lombard artist, which has so far rather been neglected, includes mostly small-sized works. Procaccini was inspired by the Netherlandish and Flemish schools, and especially by the Antwerp example. The present composition was very likely influenced by series of engravings based on designs by Maerten de Vos that were also used in Naples and Spain.
