the three-dimensional nature of each point gives the whole structure a light and a shadow side. this play of light creates an optical mixture of colour, light and shadow whose effect changes according to the direction and intensity of incident light. this relationship between colour and light differs from that of flat painting, in which light develops its effect only in the relative brightness values of colour appearance.
