…Diese spontane Geste wird im Bild zum „Ausdruck des totalen Elans“. Damit umreißt Georges Mathieu die Theorie der Aktionsmalerei. Die Intuition dürfe nicht durch die Ratio gefiltert werden. Die Unmittelbarkeit des malerischen Vollzuges gestatte auch nicht auf ästhetische Normen einzugehen und verhindere auch einen eventuellen Entwurf für ein Gemälde. (Wenige Jahre später war Europa von der informellen Malerei überschwemmt; aus der Negation der ästhetischen Standards ist selbst eine Norm geworden, die überdies in der Fülle ihrer Realisationen Werke verblüffender Ähnlichkeit hervorgebracht hat.) Bischoffshausen war jener Überlegung der Aktionsmalerei nicht gefolgt, die im Bild vorwiegend ein Aktionsrelikt gesehen hat, er war stets auf ein bildhaftes Ergebnis des Malaktes aus und hatte bei den folgenden Werkgruppen die Motivation für die Bildfindung in der Prozessualität des Malvorganges gesehen und nicht in der Umsetzung des momentanen psychischen Befindens. Den psychischen Automatismus hatte er in der Grafik und insbesondere bei den skripturalen Blättern vertreten. – aus der angeführten Literatur

...This spontaneous gesture becomes an ‘expression of total élan’ in the painting. With this, Georges Mathieu outlines the theory of action painting. Intuition was not allowed to be filtered through the ratio. Similarly, the immediacy of the execution of the picture did not permit aesthetic norms to be taken into consideration, and also prevented any potential draft of the painting from being created. (A few years later, Europe was flooded with art informel; the negation of aesthetic standards had itself become a norm, which, furthermore, produced works of astonishing similarity across the abundant artworks created on the basis of it). Bischoffshausen did not follow the idea of action painting which saw the picture as being a relic of an action; he was always looking for the pictorial result of the act of painting and, in the following groups of works, he saw the motivation for creating a picture as being located in the process of painting and not in the realization of the artist’s current state of mind.
