Dutch School, 17th Century
Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter-length,
oil on canvas, 107.5 x 85 cm, unframed
Provenance:
Private collection, Italy, until 2018
The present portrayal of a gentleman, possibly a militia officer to judge from his fine clothing, with scarlet and black sleeves, and his manly bearing, amounting to a fine example of Anglo-Dutch painting in the 1610s and 1620s. The close links between the court in London and the Dutch republic led to much artistic exchange, with several masters from the Netherlands working between the two countries. The present work has been compared with the works of one of the key proponents of this stylistic trend, Daniel Mytens (1590–1647), whose varied oeuvre is still being assembled, notably with reference to Mytens similarly composed three-quarter-length Portrait of a Man, private collection (listed in the Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek, ol. 20, 1969, p. 97, cat. 103, ill. 47).
