Earth and space from the window of Gemini V, humankind's longest spaceflight to date, 21-29 August 1965

On Gemini V, astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad circled the world 120 times in 190 hours and 55 minutes (apogee was 215 miles and perigee 100 miles), setting a spaceflight’s record and returning with dramatic color photographs of the surface of the Earth which LIFE magazine described as the “most remarkable views of Earth ever recorded” on the cover of its September 24, 1965 issue.

The on-board camera was a hand-held NASA-modified 70mm Hasselblad 500C with 80mm lens and MS Ektachrome thin base film, ASA 64.

This superb view through the window of the spacecraft shows Straits of Gibraltar looking northeast, Morocco in foreground, Spain in background on the horizon.

020:58:43 Capcom: Gemini-V, this is Canary Capcom. You need not acknowledge. I have nothing for you this pass. We are standing by. Everything looks good from the ground.
