Pende, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a mask of the Eastern Pende.
A mask of the Eastern Pende, with noticeable style elements of the well-known, large helmet masks ‘giphogo’ (or ‘kipoko’): broadly protruding ears, slit eyes, a short, slightly angular, pencil-shaped nose and a vertical decorative scarification mark on the forehead. With open, broad mouth including tongue and with an all-round border of linear triangle reliefs. The mask is carved from hard, light-coloured wood and coloured black and brown on the front side. Colour scuffing to the edges, otherwise no significant damage. Good, old, shiny usage patina at front and back.
Height: 23.5 cm; width: 28 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
