The Rotse, also called Barotse or Lozi, live in western Zambia, by the upper reaches of the Zambezi River. They are known for their carved objects for daily use (neckrests, spoons, bowls, containers, etc.). The imaginatively designed food bowls of the Rotse are well-known. The present food container is shaped in the form of an entire tortoise. Carved from a single piece of light-coloured, hard wood and dyed black. The lid is incorporated into the tortoise shell. With good usage patina. No damage. First half to mid-20th century; h: 20 cm, L: 58 cm, W: 30 cm. (ME)
