Dogon, Mali: door lock with 2 figures and a crocodile.
Lock of a container door, made of wood, of dark brown colour. In the upper section of the lock a man and a woman are depicted in a seated position (the ‘ancestor’ couple). On the body of the door lock a crocodile carved in relief. The body and crossbar are additionally embellished with a fine, geometrical line decoration. With 3 iron pins as closure mechanism as well as with 2 pointed iron bands to fasten the lock at the door. Good usage patina, minor age damage (minor cracks). H: 44 cm, W: 32 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
