Leonardo Coccorante (Naples 1680 – 1750)
Architectural capriccio with ruins and a coastal landscape in the background with figures, oil on canvas, 99 x 84 cm, framed
Provenance:
European private collection.
This painting features a composition typical of the work of Leonardo Coccorante, known for his architecturaul capriccios with Classical ruins and figures.
Coccorante studied in Naples with Angelo Maria Costa, who encouraged him to produce scenic views, reminiscent of stage sets, a very popular genre at this time. Coccorante was one of the most successful painters in this genre in Naples, which can be confirmed, not least, by the many paintings in his hand in Neapolitan collections.
We are grateful to Prof Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the authenticity of this work, having examined it in the original.
We would also like to thank Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, who independently confirmed the attribution.
