The interest in works of Modern Art is of particular importance at Dorotheum, with world record prices and top results for Austrian and international artists such as Kolo Moser, Egon Schiele, Max Liebermann, Gustav Klimt, Albin Egger-Lienz, Giorgio Morandi, Alexander Archipenko, Giorgio de Chirico, Marino Marini and Fernando Botero.
The major international auctions of modern art are held twice a year in Vienna. The auctions regularly feature works by Austrian and international artists from a wide range of artistic movements, including Impressionism, Expressionism, Jugendstil and Cubism. The spectrum ranges from artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet to Max Ernst, Alexej Jawlensky and Chaim Soutine. We offer works in a wide range of techniques, from oil paintings, works on paper and drawings to sculptures and installations.
Art from Vienna around 1900 is traditionally well represented in the auctions. Works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka regularly fetch top prices, such as Egon Schiele's Reclining Woman, which sold for 2,345,000 euros. Paintings by Koloman Moser were also very successful. Alfons Walde's The Ascent of the Skiers fetched 965,300 euros, a world record price for the artist.
The modern art department also has a strong international presence, including works by Max Liebermann and Gabriele Münter from Germany and the Italians Giorgio de Chirico and Giacomo Balla.
