“It has often been claimed that my pictures betray a sort of obsession with death, since so many crosses appear in them. One ought not to forget, however, that the cross, as everybody who has engaged with symbolism knows, is much more than a sign of death or of Christianity. The cross can signify many things. It is a universal symbol. It stands for the coordination of space, the marking of sites and territories, as well as for destruction and negation.”
