porcelain, the body with wide gilt edging, gilt moulded borders with ovals and beads, gilt leaf festoons in the white centre, the inner rim with bright gilt painted leaves and tendrils on a matt gilt band, the centre with dark brown ground and polychrome painted scene, an cupid with arrow held in the right hand standing atop a shell carriage with wheels in the water, holding red bands in the left hand and reining in two butterflies, after Raphael, Ø 24 cm,

After a gouache on cardboard, based on a design by Raphael (1483- 1520) from the bathroom of Cardinal Bibbiena (1513-1520), at the Vatican, Rome, The gouache was made by Michelangelo Maestri (1750- 1812 Rome), many of whose highly decorative gouaches contain motifs from the then only recently discovered rooms at Pompeii and Herculaneum or, as in the present case, are based on designs of Raphael and his student Giulio Romano.
Raffaello Santi, (Urbino 6.4.1483-6.4.1520 Rome), painter and architect, called to Rome by Pope Julius II., in 1515 appointed construction supervisor of St Peter's Cathedral and conservator of the monuments of antiquity by Leo X.
