Mixed lot (6 pieces), Afghanistan (Kazakhstan), Pakistan, India: a pair of Kazakh temple pendants, a pair of ear pendants from Pakistan and two ear plugs from India (Gujarat). - Tribal Art

1: A pair of very long temple pendants made of silver (2 pieces) in typical Kazakh style. Each one crafted from two teardrop-shaped pieces that are joined together. With typical Kazakh elements: underlaid red ‘glass windows’ in the upper sections, engraving and faux granulation. The larger, lower sections each have three silver bells as pendants. Length: each c. 20 cm (without hanging). Early 20th century.

2: A pair of ear pendants from Pakistan (2 pieces), probably from the tribal regions of the former North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Each of the earrings is made of a bent metal wire that is divided on the front side. The two front-facing wires are connected by metal struts wrapped with short chains of red and green glass beads. These two front-facing wires are also set with three small rectangular, decorated brass plates. The entire earrings are thickly wrapped in fabric, have a bundle of small spherical bells at the bottom and an imported white button at the front.
A very rare, old and ethnologically interesting style of earrings from the tribal regions of Pakistan.
Height: each c. 10.5 cm. Early 20th century.

3: Two ear plugs made of silver (2 pieces). A style common in the Gujarat province of India. Each with a large silver disc at the top and a tapering conical centre, with a hole in the middle. The actual ear plug is located behind this, and is pushed through a woman’s stretched earlobe. The upper silver disc is attached to the end pommels by an ornamented lozenge with two transversal decorative struts, which has been soldered on. Both pieces of this typical Indian ear jewellery have been worn frequently and for a prolonged period of time, but display no significant damage.
Height: each c. 7.5 cm; width: 7.8 cm and 8.7 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Viennese private collection.
