Yoruba, Nigeria: a pair of male ‘ibeji’ twin figures (two items). Both figures are decorated with belts of yellow and green glass beads. Style: Erin, Oshogbo, Oyo.
A pair of male ‘ibeji’ twin figures of the Yoruba people, known as ‘ibeji’. From south-west Nigeria (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64). Both ‘ibeji figures’ wear a high plaited coiffure, coloured blue by means of ‘bluing’ (‘Reckitt’s Blue’). Both bodies and the round plinth show remains of sacrificial offerings with powdered redwood. Typical tribal decorative scars on the forehead (only on one figure), as well as on both cheeks of each. Both wear belts of yellow and green glass beads. Style: Erin or Oshogbo, from the province of Oyo. No damage, and with a good shiny patina due to long use.
Height: each 25 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Galerie R. Duperrier, Paris; currently: Viennese private collection.
Lit.: ‘Ibeji. The Cult of Yoruba Twins’ by George Chemeche, ill. 69, 70, 71, 75, 87, 88.
