The Kukukuku (also called Angu or Änga) live in the mountainous hinterland of the northern coast in the east of the island of New Guinea (province of Morobe). The present bone dagger originates from the Kukukuku. It is crafted from the thigh bone of a cassowary bird, with zigzag lines and bands carved in relief, pierced in the upper section (for a carrying strap) and painted red (probably with imported lacquer). An object with traces of usage, patina and colour scuffing resulting from extended use. No damage.
Length: 26 cm.
First half to mid-20th century. (ME) ASA
