Mandarin cloth silk velvet,
China, c. 37 x 37 cm (incl. textile passe-partout), 18th century, from the 13th century until 1911 the official male dress at the imperial court consisted of a dark coat with a square-shaped insignia (buzi) on the chest and back, since it is not cut in the middle this piece is an emblem, worn on the back, representing the first rank with a crane holding a mushroom in its beak, pieces such as the present one are extremely rare, since badges of rank from such an early period are very hard to find and are always executed in Kesi technique or as embroidery - no other specimens in silk velvet are known. Excellent condition, sewn on green silk fabric. (MA)
