The present painting was previously regarded as a work by Nicolaes Maes or Nicolaas Verkolje. Ellis Dullaart of the RKD, The Hague, convincingly attributed the picture to the portraitist and genre painter David van der Plas. She compares the picture to a painting by this rare artist that was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 16 December 1999 as lot 52.
