The present painting is a typical work by Giulio Carpioni, a Venetian painter and student of Padovanino. The element of frolicking putti in a landscape frequently recurs in Carpioni’s oeuvre; for example, the figure of the putto lying in prone position and the ruins and antique statues also appear in The Triumph of Silenus (Galleria dell’Accademia, Venice, inv. no. 179224).
The same putto can also be found in a further painting by the artist that was once preserved in the Sabatello Collection in Rome (see Fototeca Hertziana, Rome, no. 212049).
