Adolf Loos (Brünn 1870-1933 Kalksburg), A writing desk, - Jugendstil and 20th Century Arts and Crafts

Designed c. 1905/10, executed by Friedrich Otto Schmidt, Vienna, walnut wood, copper plated brass fittings, the top covered with new fabric, with original key, lock and key stamped, height 79 x 130.5 x 81.5 cm, (B).

Typical of Loos is the ornamental frieze consisting of alternating vertical and horizontal squares. Loos used this decorative feature as early as 1905 for Alfred Kraus’s apartment, from then onwards resorting to it repeatedly for furnishings and apartments. He also used it to design the store of Knize Gentleman’s Outfitters in 1910. Hermann Czech makes reference to this typical ornament characterising Loos’ style in his essay, “Adolf Loos - Widersprüche und Aktualität” (p. 18).
