A “Seating Machines” stool object, Neil Nenner,
Israel, 2014, bent and welded steel, wooden slats, height 44 cm, width 40 cm, depth 29 cm. (DRAX)
Parts of the experimental “Seating Machines” series.
“I was trying to figure where the morphological borders of what we call a seating object are. What would be the minimum structure of a functioning chair? In terms of a line in space, do we still read this object as a chair/stool/sled? Each object is placed on a different point of the spectrum, between the most familiar shape (the sled) and, on the other end, the pure form following a functional structure (the small stool). I used different types of iron and Corten steel for the structures, some places require soft materials, others stiffer ones for better springiness, and so on.” (Neil Nenner)
