Peeter van den Bemden
(documented in Antwerp between 1641 and 1654)
Still life with fish and seafood
oil on canvas, 94.7 x 114.3 cm, framed
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution for the present painting. He considers it to be an autograph work by the rare Antwerp-based still life painter Peeter van den Bemden. Most of his little-known works bear the ligated monogram ‘PVB’, whereas a still life featuring shot birds sold at auction at Glerum’s in The Hague in 1992 is signed: P. VANDEN/BEMDEN. Bemden’s still lifes monogrammed ‘PVB’ have occasionally been incorrectly attributed to the painter Peter van Boucle.
