In the 1650s, the celebrated landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael painted a small number of landscapes serving as settings for cavalry engagements. The present painting fits in well with this series. The horses are swiftly painted and skilfully placed within the dynamic composition, which is viewed from a low vantage point. The confrontation between horsemen and pikemen is typical of Ruysdael’s depictions of cavalry engagements.
