The youthful god wears a gilt tined crown on his head, and holds a laurel wreath and cornucopia with fruits in his hands, to the right stands a young athlete reaching for the laurel wreath, to the left a young peasant, his spade in the soil, rectangular base with wide gilt rim, to the reverse, inscribed Johannes Schilling, height 44.5 cm, small repairs, Meissen, underglaze blue sword mark with incised dash, late 19th cent., model J 186, former no. 115, gilt painter no. 51, model by Johannes Schilling 1870 (Ru)
Zeus, the highest god of the Greeks, lord of all heavenly and weather phenomena, collector of clouds and, as bringer of rain, the source of all fertility. He rules over the gods, nature and humankind, is the arbiter of good and bad, and bestower of victory.
