Eliáš Bohumil (Nasobůrky 1937 - 2005 Praha)

Stele
clear glass, pasted, painted and cut, metal stand, sign. Eliáš 03, overall height 227 cm

The work comes from the author’s estate.

Exhibited: 2006 – 2014 - Permanent exhibit of Bohumil Eliáš’s work, Tvrz ve Lnářích

After graduating from the Glassmaking Secondary School in Nový Bor, Bohumil Eliáš continued at the VŠUP in Prague in the monumental art and glass studio with Josef Kaplický. Bohumil Eliáš’s first international success was at EXPO 67 in Montreal, where he exhibited the large Fountain. The year 1975 was a crucial one in his career, when he designed glass windows for the gothic church in Dobrš. The author effectively used the principle of horizontal layering of clear planes of glass, where glass of various thickness created optical effects and changing perceptions when viewed from various angles. The layering of cut glass panels became one of the most important principles of his work. The author maximized the usage of the optical possibilities of layering panels of glass and creating an illusion of deep inner space with a minimum of pieces.

The Stele on offer is one of the largest sculptures that he made using the technique of layering panes of glass. This piece was so important that it was included in the author’s permanent exhibit in Lnáře (until 2014).
