Horses from Marly


bronze, France, probably end of 19th century, height 56 cm (Zí)

The original pair of horses with tamer was designed by French sculptor Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746), who created them from 1743-1745 out of Carrara marble for Louis XV as a decoration for his Chateau in Marly-le-Roi. In 1794 they were moved to Paris to Place de la Concorde, and are now in the Louvre in the covered courtyard of the Richelieu Wing, which is called Cour Marly (Marly Courtyard).
