A ‘sceptre’, staff of office or dance staff made of hard, brown wood and dyed black. Finely carved, with a male half figure in the upper section, its angled arms attached to the body, the hands on the chest. Stylistically, it can be attributed to a tribe in Tanzania: Nyamwesi, but also smaller tribes such as the Pare, Sukuma, Doe, Kerewe, Zigua and many others are all potential candidates.
An old piece with shiny usage patina. Minor age damage.
First half of the 20th century; H: 51.5 cm. (ME)
