Ethiopia: A ‘magic scroll’, framed.
Long ‘magic scrolls’ were used by special priests of the Ethiopian Christian Church for healing ceremonies. During the ritual, they were placed upon the patient’s body. The present ‘magic scroll’ consists of two strips of parchment (animal skin) sewn together, with a long sacred text in black and red Ethiopian script on one side (probably ‘Geez’, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian church).
Adorned with black and red drawings (eight-point stars with a face in the centre) in the upper third and at the lower end. The text is trimmed with entwined band motifs. The role is under glass in a silvery frame.
Between the 19th and the first half of the 20th century; dimensions: 150 cm x 12 cm (the ‘magic scroll’ alone), 162 cm x 24 cm (frame). (ME)
