Workshop of Ciro Ferri

Workshop of Ciro Ferri - Old Master Paintings

(Rome 1634–1689)
Vestals,
oil on canvas, 146,7 x 189 cm, framed

The present painting is based on Ciro Ferri’s Vestal Virgins (today at the Collection Spada in Rome, Inv. No. 202). Ferri’s work dates to between 1667 and 1668, i.e. when he was in Bergamo, as documented by the letters to Count Lorenzo Magalotti. Originally intended for Vittoria della Rovere, the wife of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, the work was bought by Fabrizio’s brother Guido Spada on 4th December 1696.

The “Roman“ subject taken from antiquity, portrays traditional religious ceremony taking place in the Forum Romanum. Ferri’s treatment of the subject became so popular that Pietro Aquila (Marsala ca. 1650–1692 Alcamo) made an engraving based on it, probably executed between 1667 and 1670. Furthermore there are two additional versions sold at Sotheby’s, Munich, 2nd July 1993 (Lot No. 22) and Christie’s, London, 17th December 1999 (Lot 203). The present painting belongs to Ciro Ferri’s Roman period during the second half of the 17th century.
