The present painting is accompanied by an expert report by Klaus Ertz (October 2014). Ertz dates this winter landscape to the 1630s. It is characteristic of Verstralen’s work, informed by the example of the two Avercamps. Verstralen similarly applies the paint very thinly, to the point of transparency, though he uses incidental figures more sparingly so that his paintings retain a distinct character.
