Frans Wouters
(Lier 1612–1659 Antwerp)
Bathsheba at Her Bath,
oil on copper, 69.5 x 87.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting after its examination in the original (written communication).
Frans Wouters was one of the most important workshop collaborators of Peter Paul Rubens. In his works, he translated Rubens’s monumental Baroque style into the smaller cabinet format. For the present painting Wouters relied on a composition by his master Rubens (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden), so that it can be assumed that the painting was executed while the artist was still a member of Rubens’s workshop.
