Stanislaw Julianowitsch Zukowski *

Stanislaw Julianowitsch Zukowski * - 19th Century Paintings

(Jandrich Owitschi 1873–1944 Pruszków)
Interior, signed S. Zukowski (letters partly overwritten), oil on canvas, 88.5 x 79 cm, framed, (W)

The painting Interior by Russian artist Stanislav Julianovich Zhukovsky was probably executed immediately or just after his move to Poland. The carpet and dresser were part of Zhukovsky’s basic props and appeared in interiors executed between 1916 and the 1920s, suggesting that the painting dates from this period. A comparable composition, dated 1920, is held by the art museum in Rostov, Russia.

The interior of noble country houses was an important theme in the work of Stanislaw Zhukovsky from 1916 until the early 1920s. In the Room portrays a nocturne variation of the same named painting and is in the art museum in Rostov by the river Wolga (76 x 89 cm, inv. 168). The polish orthography of the signature added when dry suggests that the picture on offer was painted earlier in Russia, and in all likelihood before the Rostov work. The picture was presumably not signed until after Zhukovsky’s move to Poland.
