Two necklaces typically worn by chiefs and outstanding, older ‘big men’ among the Dani in the central highlands of New Guinea. Two rows of small, pierced Nassa shells are attached to a plaited band of plant fibre strings on the front. One row of lancet-shaped small plates made from sea shells (or snails) hangs on each necklace. At the centre of the ornament is a large pendant made of the same material. Both ‘big men necklaces’ show a good usage patina. Minor age-related damage. First half of the 20th century; L: c. 105 cm and 72 cm; H: 19.5 cm and 21 cm (the large shell in the middle). (ME)
