Jacobus Sibrandi Mancadan

Jacobus Sibrandi Mancadan - Old Master Paintings

(Minnertsga 1602–1680 Tjerkgaast)
Children playing with goats in a landscape with classical ruins, monogrammed lower right: JM,
oil on panel, 55 x 41 cm, framed

Jacobus Mancadan is regarded as the most important Frisian landscape painter of the Gouden Eeuw. The present monogrammed painting is a characteristic work by the painter, who is known for his mountainous and rocky landscapes with classical ruins and figures of shepherds. Whilst the brown-grey palette of his landscapes shows a debt towards the tonal landscape painting of Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael, Mancadan, who had probably never been to Italy, took his motifs of ruins from painters such as Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Bartholomeus Breenbergh. Unlike the aforementioned painters, he gave precedence to atmosphere and the equilibrium of colour over the precise observation of nature, thus creating works with great intimacy.
