Lot No. 294

Circle of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

(Milan 1571–1610 Porto Ercole)
A young man with a lute,
oil on canvas, 82 x 66.6 cm, framed

The present composition is a copy of a work preserved in the collection of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich. The Munich picture was regarded as an authentic work by Caravaggio himself until 1992, when Ferdinando Bologna first identified it as the work of an as yet anonymous painter working in the the circle of Caravaggio, the so-called Master of the Lute Player. Paintings grouped under this sobriquet have more recently been discussed by Gianni Papi in the catalogue of the 2005 exhibition, Il genio degli anonimi: maestri caravaggeschi a Roma a Napoli, Milan, Palazzo Reale di Milano.
